"Styx" describes the transformation of a powerful woman, torn from her world, during an offshore voyage. When she becomes the only person who can come to the aid of a group of mostly shipwrecked refugees, the limits of her importance and empathy of her cultural environment are shown. She is allowed to slip from one nightmare to another, and is eventually forced to acknowledge that there is no way to prevent the cruelties of real life.
